St. Rita's Michael Rembert (left) and Jerrah Young
(right) formed
a memorable post combo in the Catholic League for three years.
Post: Rembert & Young
By Frank Rusnak
Between the two of
them, they averaged 32 points, 23 rebounds and blocked seven shots a game. The both of
them were typically taller than the opponents' tallest player by at least a few inches. If
you, as the opponent, were fortunate enough to get past one of these twin towers, rest
assured that the other would come swooping from the weak side to swat your shot like an
annoying fly.
"It was fun playing with [Rembert] because I wouldn't have such a hard load of playing downlow by myself." Jerrah Young |
St. Rita's 6'7" Jerrah Young and 6'8" Michael Rembert will both be playing Division I basketball. Young for West Virginia and Rembert for Bradley. These two menacing post players helped the Mustangs to a 20-9 record and the school's first Catholic League title since 1970.
When asked for an opponent that gave this combo difficulties there is a long, deafening pause.
"I guess it'd be Mike Thompson," said Young, about his junior year going up against the current 6'10" Duke player. "When we played him we didn't think he was going to be all that great, but he was a big body and he just killed us on the boards and with dunks."
Outside of Thompson, Young and Rembert pretty much gobbled up all would be challengers such as Ricky Cornett (Notre Dame) and Chris Burras (Illinois State).
Young, one of the top one-on-one defenders in the state, was able to increase his defensive presence with the help of the thicker, stronger Rembert.
"It was fun playing with [Rembert] because I wouldn't have such a hard load of playing downlow by myself," said Young, who averaged 18 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. "It takes the load off of us by playing together. I'd just come over and swat his shot. His presence would help intimidate a lot of people to change their shots and then it'd be easy to block."
